Bengaluru: Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has strengthened its environmental sustainability initiatives by handing over a 10-hectare ecological restoration project within the Herbivore Safari Zone of Bannerghatta Biological Park, reinforcing its long-term Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) strategy and biodiversity conservation efforts.
The project, executed under the company's Harmony with Nature – Green Wave programme, was formally handed over to the Zoo Authority of Karnataka in the presence of senior officials from Bannerghatta Biological Park and Toyota Kirloskar Motor.
The restoration programme focused on scientific weed removal and native species afforestation to revive ecological balance, improve wildlife habitat quality and enhance biodiversity within the protected forest ecosystem. The initiative is also expected to increase forage availability for herbivorous wildlife, contributing to healthier and more sustainable habitat management.
As part of the ecological restoration plan, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has introduced protective infrastructure to improve the survival of newly planted saplings. The project includes solar-powered fencing around the restoration zone to safeguard young plantations from grazing by herbivores during the initial growth period, with the fencing expected to remain in place for approximately two years.
To ensure long-term sustainability, the company has also installed a solar-powered borewell irrigation system, enabling a reliable and renewable water source during dry seasons. The renewable-energy-based infrastructure is expected to improve plantation survival rates while reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, A. V. Surya Sen, IFS, Executive Director, Bannerghatta Biological Park, said industry participation through public-private partnerships is playing an increasingly important role in supporting biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration across Karnataka.
Commenting on the initiative, B. Padmanabha, Executive Vice President & Director – Manufacturing, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said the project aligns with the company's Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, reflecting its commitment to restoring ecosystems through scientific habitat management, native afforestation and renewable-energy-led environmental solutions.
The latest project further expands Toyota Kirloskar Motor's environmental portfolio beyond its manufacturing operations, complementing its broader ESG strategy across climate action, biodiversity conservation and community sustainability. Through its Harmony with Nature – Green Wave programme, the company continues to invest in long-term ecological restoration initiatives that support resilient ecosystems and responsible natural resource management.
